9 killed in grisly accident on Kericho-Nakuru road

Nine people died after a matatu they were travelling in was involved in an accident on the Kericho-Nakuru highway.

According to eye witnesses, the matatu collided head on with a petrol tanker at the Kapmakaa area in Chepsir.

Kericho OCPD Justus Kitetu said: “The accident occurred at around 1745hours on Friday. It involved a 14-seater matatu and a truck which was ferrying gas from Kisumu to Nairobi.”

According to the police boss, the truck was on the wrong lane when it collided with the matatu.

Six people are said to have died on the spot while three others succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital.

The matatu was heading towards Kericho while the tanker was on its way to Nakuru.

There was a huge traffic snarl up as the accident blocked a section of the road.

Local residents also gathered at the scene as emergency services arrived a few moments later.

Last year in July, 10 people were injured after an accident occurred in the same Chepsir area.

A bus rolled several times after the driver lost control.
