'A true ODM member would not oppose Raila' acting SG Omanyo censures flip-floppers

Omanyo was appointed acting secretary general by the National Executive Committee (NEC), which resolved to remove Edwin Sifuna from the post on February 11, 2026, citing gross indiscipline and misconduct.

Speaking at an interview on Citizen TV on Thursday, Omanyo argued that while democracy allows for diverse views, the party must remain guided by principles laid down by its founder, the late Raila Odinga.

She took issue with leaders who keep changing goalposts on their opinions, saying such flip-flopping only confuses supporters and erodes public trust in the party.

“You cannot say one thing today and the opposite tomorrow, then expect people to take you seriously. ODM is bigger than any one person; it must be defended at all times, especially when the political environment becomes hostile,” she said.

“ODM is an institution, not an individual. Loyalty means standing with its ideals even when it’s not easy,” she added.

Omanyo also echoed Raila’s long-standing stance on political engagement with the ruling administration, insisting that dialogue should not be mistaken for weakness. According to her, working with the government does not mean surrendering principles.

“Engagement is not betrayal. It’s about creating space for solutions,” she said.

Questioning calls for complete disengagement from the current administration, Catherine argued that such an approach does little to help ordinary citizens. She pointed out that matters like compensation for victims of protests cannot be resolved without dialogue.

Omanyo reaffirmed that the ODM exists to serve wananchi, not personal or factional interests. She urged members to remain united, responsible, and focused on the welfare of Kenyans.

This comes after Sifuna was ousted as ODM SG for allegedly not adhering to party resolutions and was accused of sharing his opinions that contrasted with those of the party.

Sifuna has, however, disputed the changes, alongside other top brass ODM members, among them James Orengo and Babu Owino, saying that his removal was illegal and is a political witch hunt for not supporting President William Ruto's leadership.
