Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Paul Otuoma and the National Reconstruction Alliance (NRA) party’s Okiya Omtatah have emerged victorious in the race for Busia County's Governor and Senator seats respectively.

This is according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) which says that Otuoma clinched the seat after getting 164,478 votes.

Amani National Congress (ANC) candidate John Sakwa came second with 92,144 votes in the race to replace outgoing Governor Sospeter Ojaamong.

Ojaamong, who had served for two terms, had sought the Teso South Member of Parliament seat but lost to Mary Emase of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

Human rights activist Omtatah, who was vying on an NRA ticket, on his part garnered 171,681 votes to beat ODM's Hillary Itela for the Senate seat; Alela came second with 59,276 votes.

"I thank the people of Busia for finding me worth the mandate of the Senator under the Constitution of Kenya. I promise to discharge my duties strictly in compliance with the Constitution and the laws of Kenya so help me God," said Omtatah following the IEBC announcement.
