Activist wants IG, DCI compelled to summon DPP Haji over River Yala murders
An activist has filed a case at the Milimani
Law Courts seeking orders compelling Inspector General of Police Hillary
Mutyambai and Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti to summon
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji over his remarks regarding
the unsolved River Yala murders.
This after close to 30 bodies suspected to be
of victims of extra-judicial killings were discovered in River Yala, with half
of them yet to be identified.
In the petition that has been certified as
urgent, Fredrick Bikeri argues that the DPP made the remarks on May 10, 2022
while addressing attendees of the annual National Conference on Criminal Justice
Reforms held in Naivasha.
Bikeri argues that DPP Haji indicated that he
had knowledge of investigators furnishing him and his office with limited,
altered, or improperly acquired evidence in some instances.
He further argues that the said public
confession by the DPP of his alleged knowledge of criminals involved and his continuous inaction and apparent protection of the perpetrators as
well as those involved in the alteration of evidence and the deliberate
withholding of crucial information to the detriment of the victims amounts to a
crime.
