The Aga Khan University Hospital has sued a
patient for failing to clear a Ksh.3 million bill.
In official court documents obtained by
Citizen Digital, the hospital contends that the condition of the minor patient,
admitted to the facility in February 2021 with severe TB Meningitis, has
stabilised and can now be transferred to another treatment centre.
Additionally, the hospital told the court
that the initial medical expenses for the minor amounted to Ksh.24 million
before the facility's Welfare Committee waived Ksh.13 million from the bill,
and a well-wisher covered over Ksh.6 million, resulting in pending bills
totaling Ksh.3 million.
"Due to the respondent's financial
constraints and inability to settle the hospital bill, the hospital enrolled
the patient to its welfare program and the welfare committee reached a decision
to waive 78 percent of the incurred bill that's a sum of over 13 million
shillings, but the respondents have been unable to settle the balance as at May
14, 2024," reads the court papers.
The hospital further asserts that despite
numerous phone calls and follow-ups, the minor's parents have refused to
provide consent for transferring the patient to a more affordable healthcare
facility, to keep the medical expenses from rising further.
Aga Khan added that the inability of the
respondents to settle bill is affecting its operations.
The matter will be mentioned on July 28, with
the court directing the involved parties to try settle the matter out of court.
