Agnes Kavindu Muthama clinches Machakos Senate seat in landslide victory

Wiper Party candidate Agnes Kavindu Muthama has won the Machakos Senatorial by-election by a landslide margin.

Kavindu garnered a total of 104,352 votes against United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Urbanus Muthama Ngengele who has managed a mere 19,726 votes.

The turnout stood at 21% with total valid votes cast being only 130,617 out of the 623,536 registered voters in Machakos County split across 1,335 polling stations.

The other candidates received the following votes; Mutua Katuku of Maendeleo Chap Chap (1,476), Francis Munyambu (1,461), Simeon Kitheka (1,448), Lily Mwanzia (927), John Musingi (687), Nthenge Otto (159), Jonathan Maweu (155), Sebastian Nthama (131), and Stanley Muindi (95).

Kavindu’s win now seemingly cements the political influence of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in the Ukambani region against perceived competition from UDA Chairman and former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama.

The by-election was however defined by low voter turnout for the better part of Thursday.

Poll officials remained largely idle with most polling stations reporting a turnout of less than 15 per cent by 1pm.

The Machakos Senatorial by-election attracted 11 candidates including three independent ones.

Kavindu of Wiper and UDA’s Ngengele were however seen as the front-runners alongside John Mutua Katuku of Maendeleo Chap Chap who later withdrew from the race.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Senator Boniface Kabaka in December 2020.
