Police in Kisumu County recovered an AK47 rifle in the lakeside region days after a Ugandan police officer based at Central police station in eastern Uganda’s Tororo town was robbed by a gang.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the rifle, serial number UG POL 861314 09446, was recovered by Kasagam police officers on patrol duties in the Nyalenda area.

The officers intercepted a suspicious saloon car, registration number KDL 301P, whose five occupants escaped and abandoned the vehicle.

“A search therein led to the recovery of four mobile phones and the stolen police rifle. Also found in the vehicle during processing by [Crime Scene Investigation] detectives was a homemade gun,” the DCI said in a statement on Wednesday.

Tororo District Police Commander Adam Kimuli said some accomplices in the robbery had already been arrested in Uganda and charged.

Detectives are carrying out forensic analyses to obtain crucial leads to the run-away suspects, police added, while the vehicle is detained for further processing.
