Anglican bishops want DCI disbanded amid rising brutality cases

Anglican bishops from Nyanza have now called for the disbandment of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), terming it a tool for harassing and killing Kenyans at the behest of those in power.

Speaking in Kisumu on Friday, the bishops decried the outright violence meted out on Kenyans, calling on President William Ruto to restore sanity and discipline in the police service. 

"Time has come that a body like the DCI should be phased out. It has become a dreaded unit used by those in power to harass Kenyans. IPOA has failed Kenyans and it is seen as a toothless dog that can't bite but can talk louder enough to confuse the nation that it is working," Rt. Rev. Charles Ong’injo, Bishop, ACK Maseno South, noted. 

"Let all machineries of the State that are funded by the taxpayers be allowed to do their work without interference."

The clergy, however, also called for the responsible use of social media to avoid clashing with the law.

"Our police, please come to terms with the fact that many Kenyans are cursing you every day because of your heartless and callous manner of dealing with the members of the public," Rt. Rev. John Godia, Bishop, ACK Maseno West, highlighted. 

"And it is this kind of behaviour that has led into radicalisation of our youth as they strive to resist this totalitarianism and its very many manifestations." 

The sentiments come days after the shooting and assault of protestors in Nairobi during demonstrations against the killing of teacher Albert Ojwang.
