Another university closed indefinitely: Egerton students on the rampage

Egerton University has closed its main campus and the one in Nakuru town following students unrest.

In a circular dated December 4, 2019, the university ordered that students vacate the institution immediately.

“Following unrest by students over the demand to be allowed to sit for exams without having cleared fee, Senate at its 505th meeting resolved to close the university with immediate effect until further notice,” the circular reads.

The students were reportedly protesting over fees hike.

They engaged police officers in running battles at the Njoro Main Campus for the better part of Wednesday morning.

They are reported to have destroyed some of the university property, forcing police officers to lob teargas canisters.

The students were calling for deferment of the exam card system, re-opening of the university students’ portal and deferred payment plans for those yet to clear fees.

Two days ago, their counterparts at Maseno University took to the streets in protest over alleged rape cases on and off campus.

Two female students are said to have been raped on Saturday night.

The university was also closed indefinitely with the VC Prof. Julius Nyabundi faulting the students for ‘failing to engage management.’

Students were ordered to leave the university premises by 7:30pm.
