Autopsy on 21 bodies retrieved from River Yala kicks off
A post-mortem exercise on the 21 bodies that were retrieved from the
infamous River Yala kicked off on Wednesday with chief government pathologist
Johansen Oduor leading the exercise.
The process is expected to take two days, with affected
families flocking the Yala Hospital morgue to submit their DNA samples for
matching in identifying their kin's bodies.
Human rights defenders who were present called on the
government to consider setting up a DNA repository, to ease the identification of
bodies in instances where relatives are unable to travel for the exercise.
The activists also
sent in an independent pathologist, to oversee the post mortem exercise.
According to the families, the autopsy will be concluded in
two days, but they might have to wait for two more weeks for consolidation and
subsequent matching of the submitted DNA samples to the bodies.
Two of the retrieved bodies had been positively identified
by family members.
So far, a total of 25 bodies have been retrieved from River
Yala in the past three months, raising an uproar from various quarters over the
wanton dumping of bodies into the river
