Azimio flagbearer Raila Odinga pledges to set up fund for PWDs
Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition
party presidential flagbearer Raila Odinga says he will initiate amendments to
disability laws in the country and introduce free education to all disabled
learners if elected to the top seat in August.
Odinga, who met representatives
of persons living with disabilities in the country on Tuesday, also
incorporated them into his presidential campaigns.
“President
Raila Odinga will push government to offer free education to all PWDs in public
schools, colleges and universities. President Raila Odinga will push for a
permanent tax and PAYE extension to all PWDs,” said odinga.
The former Prime Minister added
that the disabled continue to be subjected to heavy taxation and promised to
put those disabled in a social protection program.
“We need to stop treating people
with disabilities as objects of pity and begin treating them as rights bearers.
I will enhance the disability fund to give all PWDs effective social protection,”
he said.
“I will split it into two; giving
those who can do business capital to do so, and giving safety net to those who
are completely unable to engage in any form of business or activity.”
Odinga, who unveiled his national
campaign teams on Monday, said PLWDs will also be incorporated into his
national campaign think tanks. Members of the disability caucus pledged to back
Odinga's presidential bid.
He said his government will
ensure that all public utilities are made user friendly to PLWDs.
The Azimio leader heads to Vihiga
on Wednesday with a series of rallies in Emuhaya, Sabatia, Vihiga, Lwanda and Hamisi
constituencies.
