Azimio not defending IEBC commissioners but the constitution - Senator Sifuna

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has said Azimio la Umoja coalition is not defending the four Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners that petitioners want removed from office.

According to Sifuna, Azimio is against the direction that the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) has taken in determining the fate of the four commissioners.

The Nairobi Senator said the commissioners; Juliana Cherera, Irene Masit, Francis Wanderi and Justus Nyang’aya have not been accorded a fair hearing by JLAC and were not given enough time to prepare defence nor sufficient details on charges facing them.

“We are not defending the four individuals, we are defending the constitution that gives all of us certain protection that there is a procedure for removal,” he said on Citizen TV’s Day Break show.

Sifuna further claimed that President William Ruto has proven to be having a hand in the ouster of the four commissioners.

“It is all a charade, something to rubber stamp a pre-determined outcome. The president has expressed himself on this matter. He has called these people rogue officials…that they put the nation in danger by their conduct…and they subverted the democratic will of the people,” he said.

“This thing is being directed by none other than President William Ruto.”

The Senator referred to a tweet by the Head of State, where Ruto insinuated that the four are ‘rogue officials’.

“The lords of impunity, who destroyed oversight institutions using the handshake fraud, should allow parliament to hold rogue officials who put the nation in danger by subverting the democratic will of the people to be held to account. The new order is rule of law not wishes of big men,” he wrote in a tweet last week.
