Banda Annuls Elections

"I am nullifying the elections, using the powers invested in me by the Malawi constitution," she said.

This decision has sparked protests and is challenged by the national electoral authority who have continued counting votes saying Banda does not have any authority as the president to annul an election.

Banda claimed the elections were flawed with “serious irregularities” with the polls including ballot-tampering and multiple voting.

A second election would be held within the next 90 days.

Banda has said she will not stand in the election re-run.

Based on the 30 percent of votes counted Banda’s opposition Peter Muthariki of the Democratic Progressive Party was a head of the race with 42 percent of the votes, followed by Banda who has 23 percent.
