Baringo residents carry coffins for over 4km

A community in Baringo Central has been forced to carry the caskets of their loved ones for over four kilometers due to lack of accessible roads.

The journey from the morgue to where the deceased will be laid to rest in Orokwo location takes several hours on foot.

According to Bowen Mengich, one of the residents, they suffer even more as they have to endure the rocky terrain and snake bites.

Bowen narrates how sometimes they slide and fall with the casket in hand.

He further accuses both the national and county governments of failing to intervene in the situation that has persisted over the years.

Another resident, David Ng’etich, lamented over how every five years, leaders woo them with promises to construct good roads but nothing changes after they vote for them.

To make matters worse, most pregnant women give birth by the roadside as they cannot make it to the nearest health facility.

Baringo Governor Stanley Kiptis’ had begun the Imarisha Barabara Baringo initiative but it was stopped following heavy rains.
