Barracuda Airways employees arraigned over fraud claims

Two directors, a CEO and two employees of Barracuda Airways Holdings Limited have been arraigned in court over Ksh9.7 million fraud allegations.

The five, John Odhiambo Majiwa, Elizabeth Wanjiku Kinyanjui, Kimeria Boddie Maina, Stella Ivy Amaya, and Barbara Modani Alwena respectively.

The five respondents were arraigned before Milimani Law Court Resident Magistrate Sinkiyian Tobiko under a miscellaneous application by flying squad officers seeking to detain the respondents for five days on the basis that the officers are yet to serve the bank with a court order to freeze the bank account that the money was allegedly deposited in.

The magistrate denied the request for five days, but instead granted a day saying there were no compelling reasons to hold the respondents that long.

Earlier, the magistrate had released the company CEO after directing him to deposit Ksh100,000 cash bail pending charges being preferred against.

It is alleged that the respondents obtained Ksh9.7 million by false pretences from 21 people.

The complainants claimed that they made payments to the company’s accounts to be trained as pilots and cabin crew ahead of the Barracuda Airways launch that was slated for January 4, 2017, but when they visited their offices along Arwings Kodhek road they found them closed.

The suspects were arrested on 24th and 25th February 2017.

The case will be mentioned Tuesday 28th February 2017.
