Mining company Base Titanium in Kwale County is now eyeing to expand its operations to Lamu County.

This comes as its mining licence expires later in 2024.

According to the company's General Manager for External Affairs Simon Wall, already there are three prospecting licence applications underway eyeing Lamu County and the border of Lamu and Tana River County.

Speaking at the Kwale County mine site of the company, Wall says the latest lift of the ban on mining is expected to boost the sector in the country.

"We commend the cabinet secretary mining for lifting the moratorium. This is a considerable positive step in the Kenya mining sector," he adds.

Wall added that they have other prospective applications in Kwale West in Kuranze area of Kinango County.

The company is looking forward to expanding its operations in other areas of the Coastal region.

This comes as Base Titanium is expected to finish its operations in late 2024 after the expiration of its licence.

The company says they believe the same way the mineral deposits were found in Kwale County will happen in the mentioned places in Lamu.

On his side while visiting the mining site, Lamu Governor Issa Timamy welcomed the move hoping the exploration of the minerals will take place soon and bear fruit.

Timamy commended the efforts put in by Base Titanium, especially in the restoration of the area where mining took place.

He says the company has robust CSR activities which focus on empowering communities around them and hopes the same will be replicated in Lamu when mining takes place in future.
