Natalya Pasternak was collecting birch sap with a friend in a forest in the Amur region of Siberia when her pet began to bark.
The bear is reported to have first targeted the dog before attacking the 55-year-old, causing serious injuries to her stomach, legs and head.
Apparently in an effort to hide his prey to eat later, the wild animal then covered the mother-of-two with soil.
Ms Pasternak's friend managed to escape and called emergency services.
Victim at Intensive Care Unit
Police and experts arrived and shot the animal – a female, estimated to be four years old – before finding the woman buried, but still conscious.
According to the Siberian Times, the woman asked her rescuers: "Have you killed the bear?"
She was taken to intensive care at a hospital in Tynda, where doctors said her condition was now serious but stable.
The region's deputy Health Minister, Marina Gulevich, told Vostok Media: "Even yesterday, the patient remained non-transportable.
"But she has recovered. She was disconnected from the ventilator and is breathing by herself."
The Siberian Times reports that her two adult children were also at the hospital.
