MP John Kaguchia has told former president Uhuru Kenyatta to sit back and enjoy
his retirement away from active politics if he wants to be treated as a
statesman.
This
is in the backdrop of Kenyatta’s return to the limelight amid government clampdown
on his family. Last week, his mother and former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta’s
security was withdrawn, and days after police raided his son Jomo’s Karen home to conduct
a search for firearms.
In response, Kenyatta slammed President William Ruto’s government for what he
termed as an attempt to intimidate those closest to him, instead of just going
for him directly.
Kaguchia now says Kenyatta should not worry about his family’s protection, but argues it
will not be done at the expense of Kenyans.
“Uhuru
Kenyatta will be protected by William Ruto’s government but the protection of his
business, wealth and family will be in accordance with the law, it will not be
done at the expense of regular Kenyans. If he wants to be treated as a
statesman, he should also behave as one,” the MP said Tuesday during Citizen TV’s
Day Break program.
Kenyatta
has cited recent instances in the country, including the March 27 raid at his Northlands
family farm in Kiambu, that allude to the State having an agenda against him.
But the
Mukurweini MP says the former Head of State should “relax and calm down”
because Ruto will be in power for the next 10 years.
“I know
I am not qualified to advise Uhuru Kenyatta… but when a young man washes his hands,
he can sit with elders and say a word that can be taken. I want to tell Uhuru
Kenyatta to relax and calm down. Leave that high standing,” Kaguchia said.
“You did not hand over this government for three months, it is five years. I can tell you William Ruto will be in this government for ten years. The best thing to do is give him respect.”
On Monday,
Kenyatta revealed he has been forced to
share his security with his mother after hers was withdrawn.
"The benefits my mum
enjoys are not because of me but because she is a former First Lady," he
said during a meeting with editors of mainstream local media houses. "We have to hire private security guards."
He accused the
police of a plan to plant guns and drugs on his son during the Friday night
operation.
"This gun issue is surrounded by lots of propaganda to divert attention from what has been happening. I believe they wanted to plant drugs and guns in my son's compound," Kenyatta said, adding that the incident hurt him.
