A new campaign to promote both physical and digital safety was launched in Nairobi on Wednesday, using everyday experiences to teach Kenyans how to protect themselves online and offline.

The initiative, led by cryptocurrency platform Binance, coincided with Data Privacy Week and focused on drawing parallels between personal safety habits and secure participation in the digital financial world.

At the launch event, boda boda riders were given helmets and reflective gear, along with practical guidance on road safety. Organizers highlighted that just as helmets reduce the risk of injury on Kenya’s busy streets, Binance’s security measures such as encryption, multi-factor authentication, withdrawal controls, and continuous monitoring protect users’ funds and personal information online.

“Wearing a helmet is a simple yet powerful way to protect yourself on the road. In the same way, Binance’s secure platform empowers individuals to take control of their financial future with confidence and freedom,” said Saruni Maina, Regional Operations Lead, Binance Africa.

For many riders, the campaign addressed both practical and symbolic needs. Calvince Okumu, President of the Digital Boda Drivers and Deliveries Association of Kenya, said the initiative not only provided essential safety gear but also introduced riders to the concept of safeguarding digital income.

“Just as we rely on helmets to reduce risks on the road, we need tools to protect our earnings in the digital space,” he said.

The campaign also uses relatable everyday moments such as checking a matatu fare, charging a phone, or setting an alarm to reinforce the importance of being prepared and vigilant.

Beyond the launch, Binance plans to continue the campaign through social media, educational videos, influencer partnerships, and community engagement, aiming to make digital finance safer and more accessible for Kenyans.
