The Bomas International Convention Complex (BICC), a multibillion-shilling flagship project under President William Ruto, has reached 40% completion.

The scale of the work, overseen by the Kenya Defence Forces, is evident in the bustling activity across the site.

Lieutenant-Colonel Wilfrida Amondi, the project officer and architect, says phase one, which includes the main convention centre, heritage zone, and commercial street, is advancing steadily.

“The main convention centre is solar-powered and green. It has a total capacity of 11,000, including a 5,000-seat convention hall, a 3,500-seat auditorium, a 2,500-capacity ballroom, and over 20 meeting rooms. This is just phase one of the project,” she explains.

The BICC is designed to integrate Kenya’s cultural heritage with modern architecture, using the acacia tree as a key design inspiration.

The interiors showcase instruments, attire, and colours representing the country’s diverse communities, reflecting the essence of the word “Boma”, a homestead that brings together multiple cultures under one roof.

“Our cultures are very rich, and this building brings them together. Visitors will experience Kenya’s heritage firsthand while attending events or exhibitions,” Amondi adds.

Beyond its cultural significance, BICC is being developed as a fully green facility.

Solar panels will power the entire complex, and pedestrian-friendly pathways and underground parking reduce environmental impact while encouraging sustainability.

The project has also become a critical employment engine for Kenyan youth.

Jimmy Okidiang, Acting CEO and General Manager of Bomas of Kenya, notes, “Per day, about 2,200 - 3,000 young men and women are working on site. Even at 40% completion, the project is providing livelihoods and skills training to thousands of Kenyans.”

President Ruto has made the BICC a personal priority, often visiting the site to monitor progress.

“The reality is that when I arrange and make a commitment, I do it. I promised the people of Kenya that we are going to build the largest conference centre in this country,” he said.

“It is going to cost us almost Sh35 billion. Construction is ongoing day and night, and I want that facility finished by April next year. In May, you will find me there presiding over a France-Africa conference.”

The BICC, modelled to rival leading global venues such as the Dubai World Trade Centre and Singapore Expo, is expected to become a regional hub for conferences, business, and cultural tourism, linking with Talanta Sports City and offering commercial and residential facilities.

Even before its completion, the centre is already transforming lives, providing jobs, promoting sustainability, and showcasing Kenya’s ambition to the world.

As Lieutenant-Colonel Amondi puts it, “Bomas is more than a building. It is a vision of a green, culturally rich, and economically vibrant Kenya.
