‘Carry your own burden,’ IEBC tells Kenyans locked out of voting process
IEBC Commissioner Francis Wanderi speaking after the close of polls on Tuesday evening said that citizens who had been locked out of the electoral process for failing to confirm their details earlier were not entitled to fault the commission.
Wanderi accused some voters of laxity in adhering to the IEBC's directive pointing out that the commission had given enough time prior to the voting excise for all Kenyans to counter-check their details.
“In May and June, we offered Kenyans an opportunity to verify their records and check if they were in the register or wanted to transfer. We offered Kenyans an opportunity to verify everywhere. if they didn’t, they should carry the burden of their failure to vote,” Wanderi told the press.
This follows some cases across the country where voters were turned away after their names could not be found on the voter identification KIEMs Kits.
At the closure of the electoral process at 5 pm on Tuesday, about 56.7 per cent of registered voters had already cast their ballots as of 4 pm, a number he said is subject to rising above 60 per cent if the final data is compiled.
