Chaos in Mombasa Assembly as MCAs demand a new mace

One person was seriously injured Wednesday after fresh chaos erupted at the Mombasa County Assembly for the second day running as controversy to impeach Speaker Thaddeus Rajwayi and his board went on.

The afternoon session turned chaotic after a section of MCAs maintained that no activities will go on at the assembly unless the original mace is produced.

The proceedings were to be conducted with a ‘wooden mace’ after the original one was destroyed during the Tuesday chaos but some MCAs opposed and said that it was against the Constitution.

Led by two legislators Murfad Amour (Old Town) and Saad Faraj Ahmed (Tononoka), the MCAs accused their colleagues of trying to carry out assembly secession without following the standing orders, a matter they claimed discredit the integrity of the house.

The MCAs said that some of county assembly members allied to embattled Speaker were holding a meeting without  following the standing orders and the absence of the mace that was destroyed during the fracas on Tuesday.

The MCA further pointed fingers to their colleagues for improvising a “fake mace” to hold what they termed as an illegal session.

Journalists had earlier on been barred from covering the session but were allowed to go in when chaos erupted between the two camps.
