Chief, Nyumba Kumi elders face arrest over death of woman in Eldoret

An Eldoret court has ordered the arrest of four people, among them a Kaptebee location Chief, a local elder and two Nyumba Kumi elders over the mysterious death of a woman in the area.

Eldoret Chief Resident Magistrate Barnabas Kiptoo directed the arrest of the four so that they can be charged in connection with the death of 23-year-old Mercy Cheptoo who is said to have been trading in illicit alcohol.

Following an investigation that started in March 2020, the court found that Jeptoo died while in the hands of the four during an operation against illegal alcohol at Kaptebee village in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County.

During the crackdown, the woman, a mother of two, is said to have attempted to escape while running towards the river as she begged for mercy from the four. Her whereabouts remained unknown since the incident.

The suspects told the court that the deceased died after falling into the river, but the court found that the deceased also had head injuries that were caused by a blunt object according to the autopsy that was done on the deceased.

The court ordered the arrest of the four if they do not report to the Eldoret West Police Station within seven days so that they can be charged.
