Chief Justice Martha Koome has called on Kenyans to help the judiciary in dealing with rising cases of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in the country.

She says SGBV can only be tackled with concerted efforts from Kenyans and relevant government agencies.

According to Koome, the judiciary is working hard to put in structures aimed at addressing SGBV through initiatives like specialized courts.

“We hear you when you talk about children, women who are traumatized through SGBV. This is at the heart of delivery of service,” said Koome.

Speaking in Kisumu where she launched the court, Koome noted that Kisumu was marked as one of the hotspots for SGBV and such a war can only be won with support from the community.

Koome argued that SGBV is a societal problem hence the judiciary must just get support from the society to deal with the issue.

However, the Chief Justice noted that justice for the vulnerable groups whose rights have bee infringed must not only be found within the courtroom.
