Class 5 pupil swept by floods in Nyatike

A search operation to recover the body of a standard 5 pupil who was swept by floods in Nyora village, Nyatike Sub County on Tuesday is currently underway.

The local administrators together with the residents resumed their search operations Wednesday morning along river Kuja after an unsuccessful search on Tuesday.

Kakelo-Kakoth sub Location Assistant Chief Mr Sospeter Oloo said the deceased, identified as Mourine Akinyi, was a pupil at Nyora Primary School and was going home from school when she was swept by floods.

The administrator further noted that area residents could be displaced if the floodwaters keep rising; adding that farmers are now counting huge loses after their crops were also destroyed by the floods.

Residents of Nyora and Kabuto areas in Nyatike sub county have been experiencing floods every year during the rainy season when River Kuja bursts its banks.

Last year, more than 400 households from the two regions were displaced by floods, forcing them to seek refuge at Nyora and Kabuto Primary Schools for more than a month.

Currently, the national government is constructing dykes across River Kuja which are expected to avert the annuals floods.
