Clergy calls for dialogue on election law ahead of Senate special sitting

The Catholic Bishop in charge of the Homabay Diocese, Rev Philip Anyolo, has appealed to the government and the opposition to get back to the negotiating table over the contentious Election Amendment Bill 2016.

Speaking at Kitere Catholic Church in Rongo Sub County, the bishop said negotiation is the only way to resolve the conflict, adding that a show of political mighty is likely to plunge the country into violence.

The member of clergy noted that the Constitution of Kenya is a negotiated document, adding that politicians should negotiate any proposed amendments such as the Election Amendment Bill 2016.

“There was no dialogue in the issues to do with the election law but we still appeal to both sides to come together, it won’t be the first time and it won’t be the last time for dialogue,” said Rev Anyolo.

His call for dialogue comes at a time when the Election Bill that was passed by legislators affiliated to the Jubilee Party at the National Assembly last week was today (Wednesday) tabled before the Senate.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi on Tuesday, Migori County Senator Dr Winfred Machange expressed confidence that CORD senators will convince their Jubilee counterparts to allow the Bill be returned to the negation table.

Dr Machange said the constitution is a negotiated document and any amendment made should be done after negotiation between the two parties.

The outcome from the Senate and successive action by the head of the state over the Bill will determine whether the opposition will resort to a mass action on 4^th January 2017.
