The Duke of Kabeteshire, as the veteran politician was popularly known, passed away on Sunday at 5 a.m. in his sleep, according to his family.
He was the only surviving member of the independence Cabinet of founding President Jomo Kenyatta, having served as Constitutional Affairs Minister between 1980 and 1983.
Njonjo was Kenya’s Attorney General between 1963 and 1979.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, in his condolence message, described Njonjo as a selfless leader who laid the solid foundation for the country alongside his generation of independence-era leaders.
"The passing away of Hon. Njonjo is a big blow not only to his immediate family, friends and relatives but to all Kenyans and indeed, the entire African continent because of his leading role in the founding of the Kenyan nation at independence," stated the Head of State.
Deputy President William Ruto, on his part, hailed Njonjo as a knowledgeable, blunt and dedicated advocate for the causes he believed in.
“Charles Njonjo devoted his life in serving our country in pre-and post-independent Kenya as a civil servant, Attorney-General, Kikuyu MP and Constitutional Affairs Minister. He was knowledgeable, blunt and a dedicated advocate for the causes he believed in. We will miss his wisdom, company and warmth,” wrote the DP.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, meanwhile, commemorated Njonjo as a towering giant in the service of the country.
“As a nation, we have lost a towering giant who served in key roles during his life. Our legal fraternity greatly benefitted from his input and hard work,” said Raila.
“A giant has fallen. There will never be another like him. Principled and strong in his beliefs and convictions,” Siaya senator James Orengo said.
“Hon. Njonjo contributed immensely to this country's legal foundation and framework being the first Attorney General after Kenya attained independence,” Baringo senator Gideon Moi wrote.
He added: “Besides that, Hon. Njonjo was a close friend to the late H.E Mzee Moi and our family. On behalf of my family and on my own behalf, I send heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Hon. Njonjo.”
