Construction managers call for independent probe into South C building collapse

The Association of Construction Managers of Kenya (ACMK) has issued a statement expressing deep concern following the tragic collapse of a 16-storey building in South C, Nairobi.

The professional body extended condolences to affected families and all those impacted by the incident, which occurred on January 2, 2026.

In a press release signed by Secretary General Moses Mwaura, ACMK has called for a comprehensive, independent, and multi-sectoral investigation into the circumstances that led to the building's collapse.

The association emphasized that such an investigation must bring together all relevant stakeholders, including regulatory authorities, professional bodies, and independent technical experts, with the primary objective of establishing the root cause of the failure.

The construction managers outlined four critical areas that must be examined during the investigation.

First, investigators must determine whether the architectural, structural, and building services designs complied with applicable building codes, standards, and regulations.

Second, the probe must establish whether these designs were prepared, reviewed, and supervised by duly registered and qualified professionals as required by law.

Additionally, the investigation should verify whether the project underwent the full statutory approval process before construction commenced, and whether the construction works were executed strictly in accordance with approved designs, specifications, and conditions of approval.

“ACMK further calls upon all regulatory and enforcement authorities to exercise firm, consistent, and uncompromised oversight in the discharge of their respective mandates,” read the statement.

“The safety of citizens and the integrity of the built environment depend on strict adherence to regulatory frameworks, professional engagement, and effective enforcement of standards.”

The professional body emphasized that this tragic incident serves as a stark reminder that shortcuts, non-compliance, and unregulated practices carry grave and often irreversible consequences.

As a professional organization, ACMK reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to promoting professionalism, accountability, and the highest standards of practice within the construction industry.

The association pledged to continue working collaboratively with government agencies, built environment professionals, and industry stakeholders to safeguard lives, protect investments, and uphold excellence in the built environment.
