County accuses gov’t of neglecting Nyanza

Siaya Deputy Governor, Wilson Ouma Onyango, has accused the national government of not granting Nyanza region the attention it accords to other parts of the country when tragedy strikes.

Speaking Monday when he visited families and friends of the nine musicians who drowned in Lake Victoria, the Deputy Governor lamented the lackluster manner in which the national government has been responding to disasters that occur in Nyanza region is questionable.

The Deputy Governor faulted the national government of negative attitude towards the lake region arguing  that it has on various occasions demonstrated that it would only be concerned when disasters strike some given parts of the county, warning that the attitude is uncalled for and need to stop immediately.

“Contrary to how senior government officials usually throng disaster places in other parts of the country, none has managed to visit Liunda beach where nine people drowned and this is not right at all,” noted Ouma.

“The government ought to come out strongly and give support to the bereaved families during this difficult time,” he added.

Ouma has appealed to humanitarian organizations to chip in and help the bereaved families as he assured the family members that the county government is committed to ensure all the nine bodies are retrieved and given a decent send off.

Only four bodies of two women and two men had been retrieved from the water last evening by the time the search team closed the operation.

The search for the bodies of the remaining five men resumed Tuethis morning.
