County debt leaves governor without an official vehicle

Isiolo County Secretary Ahmed Galgalo on Friday said that debt inherited from former Governor Godana Doyo’s administration has left the incumbent Mohammed Kuti without an official vehicle.

Speaking during a two-day induction forum of  county officials by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Galgalo claimed that Governor Kuti, his deputy, Dr Ibrahim Issa, and all County Executive Committee members are using their private vehicles for official duties.

“We have inherited huge debts amounting close to Ksh1 billion dating back from 2014. The new officers do not have any official vehicles and are using their private cars,” said Galgalo.

Galgalo is not the first senior county official to claim to have inherited debt from the previous administration.

Governor Mike Sonko told Nairobi County Assembly on September 28 that he inherited an empty shell at City Hall with a huge debt amounting to Sh58 billion.

“It is my sincere hope that all honourable members in this Assembly shall rise to the call of duty and join the rest of Nairobians in this transformative journey to position Nairobi as the best city in Africa. I wish to take this opportunity to warn the City Hall-based cartels that soon the long arm of law shall catch up with you,” Sonko said.

In another similar incident, West Pokot Governor, John Lonyangapuo, accused his predecessor Simon Kachapin of misappropriating funds and spending millions of money on what he termed as “invisible projects.”

Speaking on Citizen TV’s Power Breakfast show on Friday, December 1, EACC CEO Halakhe Waqo  however moved to assure that the commission’s war on corruption has been “greatly politicized” but defended the commission’s performance, saying that senior officials in 10 counties have been taken to court on corruption- related matters.
