Court of Appeal judge Otieno Odek collapses and dies

Court of Appeal judge Prof. Otieno Odek died on Monday morning at his home in Kisumu.

The family says the judge collapsed and died in the house. He was aged 56.

Judge Odek served as the Director of the Judiciary Training Institute from 2016 to 2018, having become a Judge of the Court of Appeal in 2012.

In 2011, he unsuccessfully applied for the position of Supreme Court judge.

Prof. Odek previously served as a senior lecturer and Dean in Faculty of Law at the University of Nairobi.

He was also the Managing Director of the Kenya Industrial Property Institute from December 2004 to 2012.

Chief Justice David Maraga expressed his condolences, describing Justice Odek as a distinguished Judge and prolific legal scholar.

“He was not only a distinguished Judge but also a prolific legal scholar who was widely published and celebrated across the continent and beyond.

“On behalf of the Judiciary, the Judicial Service Commission and on my own behalf, I wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the entire legal fraternity for this shocking loss,” said Maraga in a statement.
