Petition filed to block aspirants with court cases from vying in August elections

A petition has been filed in court seeking to have political aspirants facing cases in court blocked from vying in the upcoming August elections.

The petitioner, lawyer Edward Asitina, argues that it is a danger to the Constitution to have candidates who have previously been removed from office through impeachment, with questionable integrity and some with active and ongoing cases in court for economic crimes running for public office.

He claims that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has refused to bar individuals with questionable integrity from running for public office.

It is his argument that the constitution will be violated if such persons are allowed to run for such offices.

According to him such persons will erode public trust.
