COVID-19: Nairobi Industrial Area Prison locked down as Kenya records 137 new cases, 8 deaths

The Nairobi Industrial Area Remand Prison will not receive any more remandees as from Wednesday, October 7 following a rise in the number of COVID-19 infections at the facility.

Making the announcement on Tuesday, Health CAS Dr. Rashid Aman said the Ministry of Health has noted an increase in COVID-19 cases in prisons particularly in the Industrial Area Remand facility.

Of the 64 COVID-19 infections reported in Nairobi over the last 24 hours, 45 of them were from the Nairobi Industrial Area Remand Prison which is 55% of the cases.

“So with regard to what we have seen in the Nairobi Remand Prison, it has been directed that the Nairobi Remand Prison will cease to receive any remandees and it will be in a closed down mode,” said Dr. Aman.

‘This is to curtail the movement of persons in and out. This we hope will bring a break to the cycle of transmission.”

He further highlighted a worrying trend in Turkana County where 34 coronavirus cases were recorded in the last 24 hours, 33 of them being from the Kakuma Refugee Camp, with 10 being new arrivals.

This comes as the country recorded 137 new cases from a sample size of 1,258 samples bringing the number of cases recorded so far to 39,586.

“This will show you that our positivity rate for today is above 10%,” said Dr. Aman.

Distribution of the 137 cases by Counties is as follows; Nairobi 64, Turkana 34, Mombasa 12, Kiambu 8, Uasin Gishu 6, Trans Nzoia 4, Meru 1, Nakuru 1, Kajiado 1, Kericho 1, Kisii 1, Kisumu 1, Laikipia 1, Machakos 1 and Tharaka Nithi 1.

Eight more patients also succumbed to the virus raising the death toll to 743.

At the same time 296 more patients have recovered from the virus bringing the total number of recoveries to 27,328.
