CS Kindiki: The future border control will be AI, data, and technology-driven

Interior Cabinet Secretary Professor Kithure Kindiki has asked Kenyans living along the borders to be extra vigilant and help security officers deal with any threats including terrorism.

Speaking during the opening of the National Border Management Conference in Nairobi, Kindiki said the future of securing the borders lies in embracing technology and artificial intelligence as security threats continue to change.

He added that the government is committed to equipping security agencies with modern security weaponry to combat threats posed along the borders.

“The use of technology, in particular digital technology is crucial for future border control and management. Future border control management is going to be driven by data,” said the CS.

Speaking when he presided over the opening of a 4-day Inaugural National Border Management Conference in Nairobi, Kindiki said the government is committed to going beyond its national security interests and deepening regional cooperation.

“Other than intra-national cooperation is of course the need for bilateral coordination which is the reason why all our brothers and sisters from the neighbouring countries are here because we are all one,” Kindiki said.

“We are progressively reducing the level of fake documentation, illegal migration, human trafficking, weapons smuggling, trafficking narcotics and money laundering among other crimes,” PS Omollo said.

The conference which brought together delegates from Tanzania, Somalia, South Sudan, and Uganda emphasized the need to tackle transnational crimes that threaten regional stability.

“The Government of Kenya has made a significant investment in equipping our security forces with the latest equipment, technology and resources to combat threats to our national security,” he said.

The latest suspected terrorist attack happened in Mandera County, where four people were killed among them security officials in an IED attack that targeted a local restaurant, drawing condemnation from the local leadership.

CS Kindiki has been visiting frontline counties that border Somalia recently, handing over security equipment and vowing to scale up operations against insecurity in the region.
