Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku on Thursday led a relief distribution exercise in Mathare, where hundreds of families were left homeless after a fire razed homes in Mlango Kubwa earlier this week.

Close to 300 residents lost their houses and belongings in the inferno, which struck a community already facing significant economic strain.

Ruku oversaw the delivery of emergency supplies, including foodstuffs, blankets, clothing, and other essentials, aimed at helping affected households stabilise in the aftermath of the tragedy. Mothers with young children, the elderly, and small business owners were among those who received support.

The CS said assessments were ongoing to ensure all displaced families receive assistance, adding that the government was considering longer-term interventions such as reconstruction support and strengthened disaster-preparedness measures in informal settlements where fires are common.

Ruku also used the visit to urge Nairobi residents to back development-focused leadership, arguing that political division had slowed progress in the city.

He criticised leaders he accused of advancing “drama and emotion” rather than practical solutions, taking a direct swipe at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whom he accused of exploiting public frustrations without offering tangible support.

Ruku said Kenyans need leaders who prioritise real challenges, including disaster response, livelihoods, and social welfare, as recovery efforts in Mathare continue.
