Daughter takes her 97-year-old mother to court for 'trespassing'

A 97-year-old woman has been taken to court by her daughter following a land tussle involving the family property in Kirinyaga County.

The daughter, who is reportedly in her 60s, accuses her mother of trespassing into her land property and collecting rent from the tenants.

The sister is said to have reported to the Baricho Police Station after which the case was forwarded to the courts.

According to the sister’s brother who accompanied the elderly woman to Baricho Law Courts on Wednesday, the mother collected the rent from tenants since the plots of land belong to her husband.

“My mother has been taken to court by my sister for trespassing. She had gone to request tenants to be paying the rent to her or sending the money to her account,” the son explained.

“We came to realise that she (the sister) had even changed the credentials of the plot documents belonging to my father.”

The brother also claims that the sister who is the second born in her family has not been supporting their elderly mother despite her financial stability.

He says that the only help the mother gets is from the rent she collects.

“The matter has been addressed by elders and uncles…there is even a record of over 10 sittings where the elders agreed with my sister to be giving my mother the money collected from the rentals. She has refused and has not given my mother any money,” he explained.
