A shooting incident occurred at Bungoma Law Courts on Tuesday, September 16, injuring five people in the process.

According to a statement issued by Judiciary Spokesperson Paul Ndemo, a firearm belonging to an officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) accidentally discharged a bullet during the hearing of a criminal case at the High Court.

As a result, the officer, a Kenya Prison's officer and three civilians were injured and rushed to Bungoma Referral Hospital.

Ndemo revealed that the five are undergoing treatment and are in stable condition.

He reassured the public of no cause for alarm as all court officials and members of the public at the court are safe.

"All court officials as well as members of the public at the Court are safe and there is therefore no need for alarm," the statement read in part.

"The County security team has since visited the Courts and is assessing the situation."
