Dennis Betts giant leap: From 190 in KCPE to impressive B- grade in KCSE

It is at Kimargis Secondary School in Bomet County that Dennis Bett turned around the wheel of fortune and scored an impressive B minus grade in his final exams.

“Ni day school so naenda asubuhi narudi home… Nikikua na shida ya karo saa zingine nafukuzwa shule… But what happened is during COVID-19. Nilitumia hio muda nikasoma sana,” he told Citizen TV.

His achievement caught the attention of Education CS George Magoha who celebrated him as the second best improved student in Kenya.

He scored a B- grade which saw him top his class. “Wakati results zilisomwa hatukuamini wazazi walifurahi,” he said. This was no mean feat.

Four years ago, he had scored 190 out of the possible 500 marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams, which is perceived to be below average.

But despite his dismal performance, his parents encouraged him to join secondary school.

Kimargis Secondary School principal Stephen Kirui said Bett was a disciplined and focused student.

“He was a very disciplined student, hardworking and a motivator. We even elected him to be a student governor,” Mr. Kirui said.

For family and the community back home, Bett’s win is a big one for them as he comes from a humble background and is now a beacon of hope.

“Kwa sababu nilikua nimepata alama kidogo, naeza taka niwe mwalimu ili nisaidie watoto wenye hawapati alama mzuri,” Bett said.

Bett overcame failure by trying again, and this time, he won big.
