Mirema shooting: Police say Dennis Karani was driver of getaway car, not the shooter

Dennis Karani Gachoki, the main suspect in the shooting of controversial businessman Samuel Mugota in Nairobi’s Mirema Drive was not the one who pulled the trigger but the driver of the getaway car.

According to the prosecution, Karani is suspected to be the the person driving the car from which the shooter alighted and later bordered after shooting Mugota and speeding away.

Police who are investigating the case on Tuesday told a Nairobi court that the shooting was carried out by more than two people.

In a miscellaneous application, they sought 14 more days to complete the probe. Court ordered he remain in police custody pending investigations.

An officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal investigations in Kasarani said they need more time to travel to Mombasa, Nakuru and Kiambu where they suspect the firearm used in the killing is hidden.

"It's in the interest of justice, the family of the deceased are still mourning and when we wanted to record their statements we were unable because they are still traumatised," he said.

The court also heard that Gachoki was in Nakuru, where he is suspected to have hid his identification card and mobile phone.

Gachoki, who surrendered to authorities of Monday, has denied the murder charges and said he is ready for investigations to be done.

The case will be mentioned on June 8.
