Do not relent on the fight against liquor, MP says

Murang’a Member of Parliament (MP) Sabina Chege has urged women and administrators to continue the war against alcoholism and drug abuse in the area.

Speaking in Gaturi Ward on Friday during an Affirmative Action Fund employment program the legislator expressed concern over the resurgence of illicit liquor and second generation alcoholic drinks in some parts of the region.

“There are reports of revival of illicit alcohol in some regions, therefore, I am calling on relevant authorities to fight on,” she said.

At the same time, Chege praised the role played by women and administrators against the fight on second generation drinks in Murang’a.

Since the beginning of the year, the government has stepped up the fight against illicit brew.

This month administration officers from Nyahururu Sub Couty seized 2000 liters of illicit brew at Ngufa River within Shamanek forest during a crackdown.

The security officers stormed into the illegal brewery and seized distilleries and other manufacturing items hidden deep in the valleys of the forest following a tip-off from members of the public.

According to reports, the brewers were manufacturing the brew deep inside into the forest, in order to prevent them from being caught.

Confirming the incident Nyahururu District AP Commander Daniel Masaba, clarified that after the manufacture of the brew, the brewers would normally transport the drink to the villages of Manguo, Kiamiana, Nyahururu and other neighboring centers within the region for sale.

The vice has also attracted the attention of various leaders in the country, among them that of Devolution Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mwangi Kiunjuri.

Kiunjuri reiterated that the government will not relent in the war against the manufacturing of illicit liquor and second generation alcohol.

He noted that the government would wage war on the underground business, even if it meant firing of police administrators who are complicit in the hazardous trade.

His sentiments came after Laikipia County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mariru announced that the county was planning to introduce a Ksh10 million fine on anyone found manufacturing illicit liquor in the county.
