Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has hit out at his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of bullying Governors Anne Waiguru and Cecily Mbarire and displaying what he termed as “primitive and prideful bigotry.”

In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday evening, Kindiki praised the two Governors as exemplary leaders who have made the country proud through their accomplishments in public service and politics.

“Governors Anne Waiguru and Cecily Mbarire have done our country proud as exemplary and successful political leaders,” he said.

“The two have variously held senior positions in public administration and politics, outpacing the naive, arrogant novices trying to bully them into submission.”

The Deputy President described the conduct of those attacking the two leaders as regressive and warned that such political posturing was doomed to fail.

“This primitive, prideful and know-it-all political bigotry and misadventure will collapse on its head: it is a matter of time,” he said.

Kindiki further called for a shift in Kenya’s political culture towards respect and persuasion, rather than ethnic mobilisation and personal attacks.

“In the 21st century Kenya, democracy has to be about persuasion, respect for one another and canvassing policy alternatives,” he stated.

“It cannot be about useless, dangerous ethnic chauvinism that recklessly pits sections of our country against the others. Respect the people and their leaders.”

Kindiki’s remarks come after Gachagua accused Governor Waiguru and Kirinyaga MPs of being enemies of the Mt. Kenya community, maintaining his earlier sentiments that the leaders had sold their community to President William Ruto.

Speaking during a rally in Kirinyaga County on Tuesday, Gachagua dismissed demonstrations organised in defence of Waiguru and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire on Monday.
