DP Ruto: Bishop Korir will be granted state funeral

The late Bishop Cornelius Korir of the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret will be accorded a State funeral, Deputy President William Ruto said on Sunday.

Speaking at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Eldoret during a special mass in memory of the deceased, Ruto said Bishop Korir would be honoured for his contribution to the peace of the country.

The deputy president told the congregation that President Uhuru Kenyatta had directed him to work with other church leaders to ensure the late catholic bishop is granted a befitting send off.

“The President has ordered that the government together with the Catholic Bishops organize Bishop Korir’s burial since he played a major role in advising the government and uniting Kenyans across the country and he also delivered more than his call in the church,” said Ruto.

Other North Rift region leaders who were in attendance including Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago praised Bishop Korir for his good deeds.

Among those present were Governors Jackson Mandago of Uasin Gishu and his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Alex Tolgos.

MPs Alfred Keter, Sila Tiren, Oscar Sudi, Caleb Kostany and Vincent Tuwei also attended.

Bishop Korir passed away in his Eldoret home on Monday (October 30) and his body was transferred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary. He died aged 67.

President Uhuru Kenyatta mourned Bishop Cornelius Korir, describing him as a great religious leader and an excellent peacemaker.

He will be buried at the cathedral on Saturday, November 11th.
