The Rotary Club of Nanyuki has inaugurated its incoming leadership team under President Becky Ngatia, launching a solution-oriented agenda to address pressing community challenges with fresh energy and purpose.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Farida Karoney—Chair of the National Lottery Board and former Cabinet Secretary for Lands and Physical Planning—challenged the membership to redefine leadership by investing in future leaders.

President Ngatia emphasized a culture of philanthropy within the club. “We want to foster a philanthropic atmosphere by encouraging all members to support our initiatives,” she said. “We’ll hold engaging fundraising events that ensure every member feels valued.”

At the vibrant installation event held at Nickolee Hotel, Dr. Karoney inspired Rotarians to leave a legacy that extends beyond service to include mentorship, sustainability, and resilience. “It’s impossible to succeed alone. Build a pipeline of leaders. Select them,” she urged. “I’m encouraged by the number of young people here. Speak up, stand for your ideas, and don’t fear vulnerability.”

Drawing upon her deep experience in systems-thinking—melding analytical rigor, strategic foresight, and human-centered leadership—Dr. Karoney’s remarks went well beyond ceremonial duty. She challenged the club to embed such thinking into its ethos.

“Leadership is about people,” she asserted. “Create psychological safety, allow teams to fail and learn, and mentor others. Build support systems that enable work-life integration.”

Outgoing President Audrey Kathurima lauded Dr. Karoney’s address as a masterclass in sustainable leadership and strategic change. “Her systems-thinking and foresight provide a blueprint for the kind of leadership we should aspire to,” Kathurima reflected.

Under Ngatia’s leadership, the club plans to expand its community library network from seven to eight satellite branches, strengthening its commitment to literacy and learning. Additionally, a new tree-planting initiative will roll out across the Mt. Kenya region, featuring 90% indigenous and 10% fruit trees, alongside the establishment of Interact Clubs in Laikipia schools. “Each school will manage a tree-planting project, helping students develop leadership skills and community service values,” Ngatia explained.

The evening celebrated both tradition and renewal. The deeper message was clear: the Rotary Club of Nanyuki is stepping beyond conventional service, aiming to shape, nurture, and empower the next generation of leaders.
