Drama as Nairobi MCAs attempt to eject Speaker Elachi from office
Drama was witnessed at County Hall offices on Monday as Nairobi MCAs stormed Speaker Beatrice Elachi’s office demanding her ouster.
The MCAs, in their attempt to evict the speaker from office following her controversial impeachment last week, complained of the alleged use of pepper spray.
“On Thursday last week, Members of County Assembly impeached Madam Speaker with six counts of allegations after the mover of the motion convinced the members. You cannot stay in a place where 98% of the people do not have confidence in you,” said majority leader Abdi Guyo.
“The President of the Republic of Kenya gave Madam Speaker an opportunity to serve Nairobians as the second speaker of the County Assembly of Nairobi. She was not sent here by the party to come and plunder the county resources as she did.”
Addressing the press from her office before the chaos erupted, Elachi claimed she was being fought by the MCAs for fighting corruption.
The embattled speaker was last week ousted by the MCAs who achieved the two-thirds majority required after 103 members voted in favour of the ouster.
Elachi, however, immediately moved to court and obtained conservatory orders blocking her removal from office pending the hearing and determination of her petition.
