A 35-year-old rape suspect is nursing a gunshot wound at Siaya County Referral Hospital after he was shot for attacking and seriously injuring a police constable in Alego/Usonga Sub-county.

The suspect identified as Isaiah Otieno alias Otiti was shot on the thigh after he attacked and hacked police constable Chacha Mwita on the head using a panga.

According to Siaya County Police Commander Mr. Cleti Kimaiyo, the injured police officer together with his two other colleagues, Wesley Tonui and Samdon Mandere, had gone to arrest the suspect after he was connected with a rape case that had been reported at Kowet Police Station.

He stated that the officers had proceeded to Rachuonyo village within Nyamila Sub-location to effect the arrest after the rape incident allegedly took place at his homestead

Mr. Kimaiyo stated that the officers introduced themselves and ordered the suspect to open the door and surrender, but the said suspect came out while armed with a panga then attacked the police constable who was at the door.

The police boss stated that in the event, the suspect hacked the police officer on the head before attempting to escape, prompting the officer to fire one round of ammunition from his AK-47 riffle in self-defense and to prevent him from escaping.

In the process, the suspect sustained an injury on his left thigh while police constable Chacha Mwita sustained a cut on his head.

Mr. Kimaiyo added that the suspect was overpowered by the other officers and arrested before he was rushed to Siaya County Referral Hospital together with the injured police constable for treatment.

The county police boss said that a panga was recovered from the scene and kept as an exhibit.
