Driver arrested after 39 bodies found in lorry container in London

A man said to be from Northern Ireland has been arrested after 39 bodies were found in a lorry container he was driving to Essex, London.

The 25-year-old who is under custody on suspicion of murder is said to have driven the lorry from Bulgaria and entered the country through Holyhead on Saturday.

According to CNN, police were called to the scene on Wednesday morning following the grisly discovery at Waterglade Industrial Park.

Reports indicate that the lorry had 38 adults and one teenager though their identities are yet to be revealed.

Ch Supt Andrew Mariner told the Guardian newspaper: “Our inquiries are ongoing to establish what has happened. We are in the process of identifying the victims. However I anticipate that this could be a lengthy process.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Twitter:

“I’m appalled by this tragic incident in Essex. I am receiving regular updates and the Home Office will work closely with Essex Police as we establish exactly what has happened. My thoughts are with all those who lost their lives & their loved ones.”

19 years ago, 58 Chinese immigrants were found dead inside a lorry in Dover, BBC reported adding that they appeared to have been suffocated.
