3 Kilifi county officials arrested over alleged misuse of coronavirus funds

Three Kilifi County officials have been arrested over allegations of misuse of COVID-19 funds.

Among those arrested were Arnold Mkare (Kilifi County Secretary) and two chief officers from the department of Health: Dr. Bilali Mazoya and Alio Ibrahim Adan.

“The county officers have been reluctant, neglected or failed to provide EACC with the information. Today we came here to pick those officers who have refused to share those documents,” said EACC regional boss Mutembei Nyaga.

According to him, the four who were arrested failed to produce documents detailing how millions of shilling were spent in the construction of a multi-million Covid-19 complex centre in the country.

He revealed that the project was to be constructed at the cost of Ksh.890million with the first phase expected to cost round Ksh.493 million.

The second phase was projected to cost Ksh.398 million.

EACC’s Upper Coast Regional Coordinator Egnatus Wekesa said officers who had visited the complex to probe the matter were verbally assaulted.

“Officers came here for investigations on the Covid-19 Medical Complex. They stayed up to around 4 pm…at the end of the day they were insulted,” he said.
