EACC, MOH set up teams to probe Ksh5bn theft

The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission alongside the Ministry of Health have set up special teams to investigate the alleged loss of Ksh5 billion at the Health Ministry saying that their report will be released in 30 days.

Speaking at the ministry’s headquarters in Afya House after a raid that lasted over 1 hour, EACC Chief Executive Officer Michael Mubea said that Ministry of Health officials have assured EACC detectives that all relevant documents related to the scandal will be provided during the investigations.

This comes just a day after staff at the Companies Registry were unable to trace the files for Estama Investments, registered as an EPZ company, and Life Care Medics.

The two companies are said to be beneficiaries of cash meant for patients, expectant mothers and newborn babies in the free maternity programme offered by the government.

Pressure is now mounting for the resignation of Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia who held the health docket when the bulk of suspect payments in the ministry were made.

MPs are also demanding the resignation of senior government officials linked to the unfolding scandal even as the identities of the individuals behind the companies that obtained millions in questionable deals emerge.

On Thursday the Senate Health Committee called for the resignation of Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu and his PS Nicholas Muraguri over the scandal.
