Education Ministry shuts down private school in Siaya

By George Amolo

St. Julian’s Academy, a private girls’ secondary school situated on the outskirts of Siaya town, has been closed by the Ministry of Education due to poor management.

According to Siaya County Director of Education, Mrs. Nereah Olik, they ordered for the closure of the school after noticing that it was not giving quality education due to lack qualified personnel.

Olik revealed that her officers had visited the school in 2015, and they told the administration to hire trained teachers. Since the school’s leadership failed to comply with the directive, the school had to be closed down.

Addressing journalists in her Siaya office, she stated that even though the school belonged to a private developer, the students are Kenyan, therefore Ministry still has oversight.

The Education Director said that most of the students have since been absorbed in various schools, because her team had already made arrangements to find placements for them.

She advised parents whose children may still be stranded to liaise with her office for assistance.

By the end of last year 2015, the school had an enrollment of 80 students.
