Eldoret Forex scam: Over 60 file complaints as police accuse DCI of protecting Ambrose Abuti

Another day, another tale of pain and agony
inflicted on hopeful investors in Uasin Gishu County at the hands of Ambrose
Makech Abuti.
With each passing day, the extent of the
conviction that Abuti held over hundreds of Uasin Gishu residents comes to
light.
The man accused of fleecing hundreds of
millions of shillings is still a free man despite the very loud lamentations of
his victims, some of whom have reported their cases to different police
stations in Eldoret town.
Bishop Alfred Andove of the Haleluya Church
is one of the latest victims who entrusted his life’s savings with Ambrose.
Like others lured by the promised high
returns, he not only gave his savings but also sold all his property to top up
the investments to the tune of Ksh.15 million.
An influential figure in Eldoret town, who
asked for anonymity, says he is both afraid and ashamed to face his family in
the wake of the Ksh.7 million loss he suffered when Ambrose disappeared with
the money he had sourced from his savings, his family’s and his friends.
True to what is now shaping up to have been
a strategy, Ambrose hid behind religion to gain the trust of not just religious
leaders but also the faithful.
Bishop Gideon Mudenyo, who also invested
his own money and lost, says he was taken in by Amborse’s protestation of faith.
“Alikiri kuwa mkristo, alikuwa kwa praise
and worship, alicheza guitar,” the bishop says.
Mudenyo like other religious leaders
allowed him to preach his investment gospel to the congregants.
Many of them now are reaping the ruins of
that get-rich-quick scam that Ambrose so convincingly wove.
“Wakati tunalia kama kanisa, tunagundua
kuwa tuko wengi waumini pia wanalia, kwa sababu ya kupoteza, kuna wengine
wamepoteza Maisha yao kwa msukumo wa moyo, wengine wamekuwa wagonjwa,” says
Mudenyo.
The affected people are still questioning
how and why Ambrose hasn’t been arrested following their revelations.
Police in Eldoret who spoke to us on
condition of anonymity say they are equally frustrated by their colleagues from
the DCI, whom they accuse of working together with the accused to evade justice.
They say dci officers who have stayed at
the police station for long are conspiring to defeat the search for justice.
